The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) serves Canadian researchers, with the objective of advancing Canada’s position as a leader in the knowledge economy on the international stage. By integrating, championing and funding the infrastructure and activities required for advanced research computing (ARC), research data management (RDM) and research software (RS), we provide the platform for the research community to access tools and services faster than ever before.

The Web Application Developer is accountable for contributing to the creation, design, development, and maintenance of software in support of operational needs of the Alliance and the Federation, including architectural and security aspects of web applications and databases. The Web Application Developer will be a member of the Operations and Security team and reports to the Director, Operations.



  • Review Cisco DUO’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of software in support of the Alliance's programs.
  • Develop and improve user interfaces and functionality in web portals.
  • Support for the maintenance of the software stack.
  • Maintain and develop the codebase utilizing best development practices.
  • Work with stakeholders to develop or modify existing business processes.
  • Provide technical support to Federation staff members and users.
  • Create reporting information for stakeholders as required.
  • Provide support for other internal software development projects as needed.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of web applications.



  • Post-Secondary Degree in Computer Science or equivalent in combination of skills and experience in a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience in a software developer role.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing is required. Having these skills in both of Canada’s two official languages is considered an asset.
  • Ability to understand legacy code and adapt or improve it.
  • Experience with software development in Linux/Unix environments.
  • Experience with 'git' or a similar version control system.
  • Knowledge of MVC frameworks.
  • Relevant experience with SQL (or a university course in relational databases).
  • Experience with web development (JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, AJAX).
  • Familiarity with automated testing and testing frameworks such as RSpec.
  • Experience with two or more programming languages.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, Bootstrap, or UI Design would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian research community is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to learn in general, and to learn new technologies in particular.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively in a highly distributed, federated environment of stakeholders, researchers, users, and co-workers.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
