Data Movement (Globus)

The Globus Portal, launched in 2014, is a fast, reliable and secure service that makes users’ big data portable. Research generates a lot of data, but with Globus, in just a few clicks, users can securely share and transfer terabytes of data between two locations.

The portal has a user-friendly interface that automates the management of file transfers between resources, whether they are at a supercomputing facility, a campus cluster, on a lab server, a desktop, or a laptop.

Globus can be used to move data between any two federation systems. If a user is looking to move data from one of our clusters to a local machine, this is also possible through Globus, which provides a simple mechanism to set-up and manage such transfers. It can even do so behind a firewall or NAT without any administrative privileges. It can also be used to move data between two machines that are not connected to federation infrastructure through Globus Connect Personal.

Globus makes users’ lives easier by handling the time-consuming, error-prone IT tasks involved in data movement, allowing them to focus on their important research.

Other key benefits of Globus include:

  • the ability to monitor performance and fix any transfer issues and produce status reports
  • the ability to accelerate researchers’ work, giving them a chance to share big data easily and collaborate with other researchers.
