Randall Sobie

Dr. Randall Sobie is an Institute of Particle Physics Research Scientist, Professor and Director of the Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre at the University of Victoria. He is the Director of HEPNET/​Canada, which coordinates the national and international research network connectivity for the Canadian subatomic physics community. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal SoftwareX.

Dr. Sobie is a member of the ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva that discovered the Higgs Boson in 2012. He is a member of the Belle II Experiment at the KEK Laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan that is seeking to understand why the universe is made of matter and not equal amounts of matter and antimatter. Sobie has been focused on how cloud computing can provide resources to process the petabyte-scale data samples of the two projects. Sobie is the Principal Investigator of a CFI Cyberinfrastructure Award and was Principal Investigator of a CFI Innovation Award for computing and research data storage in 2002.
