The 4th National Data Services Framework (NDSF) Summit is a forum where the Canadian research community can learn, collaborate, exchange ideas, and discuss common issues, with a goal of developing a shared understanding of the current data management landscape and recommendations for future initiatives.
The Summit theme, Crafting the Canadian Open Research Commons, indicates a digital research infrastructure ecosystem that available to all Canadian researchers, and one that is interoperable at a global level.
The 2021 NDSF Summit outcomes will be distributed widely in the Canadian DRI ecosystem, and directly to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the National Digital Research Infrastructure Organization (NDRIO), and other key stakeholders.

Who should attend?
The NDSF Summit is targeted at all levels of participants in the research ecosystem, including:
- researchers
- infrastructure providers
- funders
- publishers
- librarians
- research service providers
- senior administrators
Topics:
Building on the previous three NDSF Summits, this year’s event will use small group discussions as the foundation, with a focus on four outcomes:
- The needs of researchers and intersections with existing/emerging research data management services and resources;
- Synergies with the three primary digital research infrastructure (DRI) pillars (data management, research software, and advanced research computing);
- Intersections between national and international actors and jurisdictions;
- “Rules of engagement” for platforms/services/resources to participate in a NDSF.
Results of discussions will inform the evolution of the NDSF and build on previous NDSF Summit outputs, as well as the collective activities of the Canadian research data management community. The Summit will also intersect with international efforts at building a Global Open Research Commons, which is intended to provide a globally integrated suite of research infrastructures.

In addition to plenary sessions for the whole group, 5 breakout sessions will each work to develop information and recommendations on the outcomes described below.
Each breakout group will discuss a special set of questions, intersecting with a number of themes and stakeholder groups. The same cohort of attendees will attend all 5 breakouts together to ensure a continuity of the conversation.
