Today marks my first day as the CEO of the New Digital Research Infrastructure Organization (NDRIO). This is a very humbling day for me. It’s an incredible honour to lead and serve this great organization. I want to thank the Board of Directors for having faith in me to lead NDRIO during the evolution of Canada’s DRI landscape.
A bit about me: I am passionate about technology and believe it holds the potential to change how we think and live. I stand against injustice and advocate for a better human condition. I believe in the strength of our private sector and have great respect for our public sector. I approach these perspectives as someone with the heart of a researcher.
A researcher, to me, is someone who seeks knowledge using systematic investigation. It is a principle I have adopted in my life, and will continue to embrace as I learn how to best serve this community.
As we embark on a new journey together, we do so in the midst of an unprecedented time. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented all of us with a multitude of challenges, both professionally and personally. However, never before have the public and policy-makers had an opportunity to witness first-hand the relationship between research and computing, and its immediate impact on daily life. COVID-19 has demonstrated the value proposition of Digital Research Infrastructure in very meaningful ways, and it’s motivated me to build on that with our Members.
Over the next few months, you can expect a plan, change and action.
We have much to achieve. Together, we will create a single integrated ecosystem of Research Data Management, Advanced Research Computing and Research Software, making Canada a global leader in Digital Research Infrastructure. I, for one, could not be more motivated or excited by what lies ahead.
I had an opportunity to address NDRIO Members at the first AGM on September 24, 2020. A copy of my full remarks, along with my Q&A with Peter MacKinnon, Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors, can be found on NDRIO’s website.
I wish you and your families good health, and look forward to collaborating with you in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Nizar Ladak
